MMDA features 'indie' films

Manila (9 December) -- Aiming to promote quality independent films, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will show five independent (indie) films starting December 16, 2010 at the Robinson's Galleria in Ortigas.

The pre-festival offering will show indie films which are usually acclaimed in various film festivals abroad and had earned worldwide accolades but have not been shown commercially in the Philippines.

Chairman Francis Tolentino said the event is MMDA's way of helping small film producers promote their works and to revive public interest and patronage for the local film industry.

One movie will be shown each day until December 20 at 7:00 p.m. at Cinema 3 of Robinson's Galleria.

"Nasaan si Hefte" will be the initial offering of the event. Directed by Jonah Lim, it is a story about seven-year old boy Hefte who was declared missing, found in the garage after six years, and mysteriously claims to be another person.

"Presa" will be shown on the second day (December 17). Starred by veteran actresses Anita Linda, Daria Ramirez, Perla Bautista, and Liza Lorena, the film touches on the story of an 85-year old prisoner who tries to rethink her life and reconcile with her loved-ones as she awaits presidential pardon in the

Women's Correctional on Christmas Day. Also parts of the movie are Rosanna Roces, Tetchie Agbayani, and Jodi Sta. Maria.

On December 18, "Senior Year" will be on the spot light. It tackles the struggles of students during the final month before graduation and features the complexities of adulthood. The movie is directed by Gerold Tarog.

A movie about an overseas Filipino worker who turned amok after losing his job and catching his woman with another lover will be shown on December 19. Rated R18 by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board, "Rindido" stars Noriel Jarito, Banjo Romero, Vic Tiro, and Chanel Latorre.

The last day will showcase "Slow Fade", a story about Darius, a frustrated filmmaker afflicted with a terminal illness who rediscovers his long-forgotten craft. By doing a series of videos about himself and his community, he remembers the beauty of life.

One segment of the Awards Night Program scheduled on December 26 shall be dedicated to the independent filmmakers to highlight their participation in the MMFF. Special citations will be given to all participating films.

One entry will be given the award for Achievement in Technical Excellence and shall receive a sponsorship from Fuji Film to convert the film into 35 millimeter picture for showing in regular commercial run after January 7, 2011.

"I am hopeful that the moviegoers will support this event and continue to patronize all the entries to the annual Metro Manila Film Festival which is set to open on Christmas Day," Tolentino said. (PIA NCR/jleguiab)
